Afren PLC ("Afren" or "the Company"), the Africa-focused independent oil and gas company, today announces the successful placing of 21,400,000 shares at 35p with institutional investors, raising �7.5 million (before expenses) in working capital. An application has been made to AIM for the new ordinary shares to be admitted and it is expected that trading will commence on 4 July 2005.

The Company announces that on 1 July 2005, it was notified of the following: As at 1 July 2005, Lansdowne Partners Limited Partnership, on behalf of client funds that it manages, held 12,410,000 Ordinary Shares in the Company, representing 7.68% of the total issued share capital of the Company.
